The Jack O' lantern has become the symbol of halloween or all hallows eve. this "holy day" to honor the departed was just many of the Pagan holidays adopted by the early church in an effort to convert pagans to christianity. to the witch and the pagan it is known as samhain(pronounced "sown"), this pagan "holy day" or holiday, not only honors the departed, but it is the day when the "veil" is thinnest between the physical world and the "other world". it is a day for working strong magick!
